The aims of the present study were to elucidate the feelings of nurses who have experienced incidents/accidents and determine how their feelings change afterwards. In addition to the nurses' feelings, their relationships with people around them, including medical staff, patients, and patients' families, were also taken into consideration. Participants: Five female nurses (age range, 24-30 years) who had experienced incidents/accidents. Method: Content analysis of semi-structured interviews. Results: The data indicated that all nurses felt "fear", "anger", "guilt", "relief", "tension", and "reliance" following the incidents/accidents. Of these feelings, "fear" significantly influenced them. The issues the nurses felt "fear" about were categorized into five headings: (1) medicine; (2) the nurses themselves; (3) the possibility that they could experience an incident/accident; (4) relationships with people around them; and (5) patients' conditions. Experiencing an incident/accident provided nurses with an opportunity to consider how they had cared about their patients and pay more attention to their patients. After experiencing an incident/accident, the nurses' recognition of their own caring was fostered through studying with staff and supervisors. Upon reaching a position in which they could supervise junior staff members, they reconsidered and recognized the meaning of the incident/accident they experienced and the responses of their supervisor. Therefore, experienced nurses treated junior nurses as they had been treated by their supervisor/Head Nurse. Staff and the supervisor/Head Nurse should not interrogate the person who caused the incident/accident; instead, they should understand the psychological consequences the nurse faces and try to identify the cause of the incident/accident.
