This research investigates the way by which physical exercise brings changes to daily life of the patients with chronic diseases. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three subjects who had chronic renal insufficiency, femur neck fracture, and cerebral infarction. In spite of those illnesses, they continued physical exercise at the gym. The interviews were analyzed using a case study method. The following findings were obtained. 1. The subjects became independent in activities, such as walking, driving a car, and hou sekeeping. 2. Their perception of their illness changed. For example, they began to feel that they were no longer ill despite their disabilities as they became more independent in daily activities. 3. The motivation to begin physical exercise was the hope that they would avoid becoming bedridden, as well as the determination that they would eventually walk again. 4. Prior to their illness the subjects had enjoyed sports, such as playing golf and table tennis. Their desire to regain the ability to participate in these sports and experience the pleasure of exercising were the major factors that motivated them to continue to do physical exercise.
