This study sets out to clarify what pregnant women and their family members and midwives feel, what they experience, and what happens between them as they interact, using "expression", including words, gestures, facial movements and tones of voice as the medium of exchange. With this as a basis, it then aims to identify the characteristics of "midwifery expression" as family care. The philosophical theories of expression as put forward by Kitaro NISHIDA and Motoyori KIMURA have provided a number of useful suggestions. The researcher's informants comprised 3 midwives and 6 pregnant women and 14 their family members who were in their care in the Delivery Care Unit of a general hospital in Tokyo. The research methods used were participant observation and an interview method. The data were analyzed and recorded in accordance with the procedures that the researcher had developed to fit the objectives of the study and the quality of the data recorded. Through 2 case studies, the characteristics of "midwifery expression" as family care were identified as follows; "expression as medium that connects unity and unity", "expression as medium that connects unity and multiplicity", "expression as medium of creative world". In addition, the existence of the multilayered immanent structure of these characteristics was recommended. A further, broader task is to examine and to refine the results of this research by collecting the cases and developing the methodology.
