The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the inpatients' participation in the decision-making process of their nursing care and the following four factors; 1) inpatients' role perception and attitude, 2) general decision behavior, 3) self-esteem, 4) nurses' behavior to patients. Questionnaires were distributed to 120 inpatients who were hospitalized at obstetric department. Responses from 110 were subjected to statistical analysis. The following results were obtained: Almost all inpatients participated in the decision-making process of their nursing care with nurses' support. 20 percent of inpatients followed their nurses' instruction unconditionally. They regarded their nurses as authorized. The heavier stress in general decision-making process brought the more deference to their nurses in the decision-making process of their nursing care. The more often application of "the choice" in general decision-making process brought the more active participation in the exchange of information in the decision-making process of their nursing care. Inpatients' participation in the decision-making process of their nursing care had no clear connection with their self-esteem. There were three important factors for the inpatients to have the sense of sharing the same goal with their nurses. One was enough information, another was to be sensitive the inpatients' wish, and the other was to let the inpatients choose.
