The purpose of this study was to investigate indicators of self-care agency for patients with chronic illness, as evaluated by nurses. Thirteen nurses engaged in the care of chronically ill patients were interviewed to gather qualitative data on the indicators of self-care agency. The mean work experience of the nurses was 9 years. The interviews were recorded on tape, and a content analysis method was used to analyze the qualitative data obtained. Six components of self-care agency for chronically ill patients were obtained: a) physical function/cognitive level, b) ability to concentrate one's attention on self-care, c) ability to make decisions about care of self, d) ability to tend to one's physical condition based on personal strengths and weaknesses, e) ability to perform self-care operations, f) ability to receive valid support. According to the nurses' evaluations, physical function/cognitive level and ability to make decisions about care of self were distinctive components of self-care agency. The nurses evaluated the self-care agency for chronically ill patients while evaluating their own nursing care for the patients.
