Tony Last in A Handful of Dust is a happy domestic man, who has got enough money and loves his estate. He is kind to his beautiful wife and proud of his son and heir. Hetton Abbey is where he has grown up and he is hoping that in his sons day his house would recover its fame. We gradually get to know, however, that Tony loves Hetton alone and he is playing the role of Victorian patriarch. His wife Brenda leaves him soon after their only son died in an unfortunate accident. She understands that to Tony, Hetton comes first and he needs all other things, including her, to help Hetton prosper. After his son's death, the world seems to be against Tony. He, therefore, has sailed for Brazil in search of a City, which he pictures as transfigured Hetton in his mind. Instead of arriving in the City, Tony is captured and made prisoner by illiterate Mr Todd who loves Dickens. Every day Tony has to read aloud Dickens's works for him and there is no hope to go back to Hetton. It is a kind of punishment for his selfish love for Hetton and himself. However, it can also be said that his dream to shut out the outside world has been, in a sense, realized.
