This paper presents a fracture mechanic analysis of shear deformable plates and shells using dual boundary element method. The shells integral equations are formed by coupling boundary integral equations of plate and plane stress. Traction integral equations are used for one crack surface, while on the other crack surface and the remaining boundaries displacement equations are employed. An incremental crack growth procedure are used to perform the simulations, where five stress intensity factors, fatigue life cycles and crack growth directions are calculated for every increment of the growth. The method is considered effective since no remeshing is required and the crack extension is modelled by adding new boundary elements to the previous crack boundaries. Some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method.
