Computers are no longer a nuisance in people's lives; computer assisted instruction (CAI) is gaining more and more popularity. CAI is powerful, and conforms with the students' needs in that they can learn at their own pace, in the way they like and in the order they like. People usually praise CAI as good instructors, and the reason they often give is that CAI patiently explains or reads to the learner, and never gets angry. But patience is only one of the factors which makes a good teacher. This paper points out that a good CAI program has to make sure that the learner acquires and retains the necessary information in the most efficient way, in addition to providing accurate and useful material. In a CAI classroom, the teacher' s role will have to shift from that of a lecturer or instructor to more like a coordinator or adviser. As is true with the development of other technologies, the success of CAI will depend on the involvement of both the language teachers and the computer specialists, especially of the latter.
