The New Year's Holiday of the Lunar Calendar is the longest and most enjoyable holiday for the Chinese. This holiday, positioned with two weekend holidays before and after the new year, can last from seven days to two weeks or even longer. For the transportation sectors, it is the busiest season of the whole year. Starting from ten days before the new year, approximately 1.5 billion Chinese travel to their hometowns or to scenic spots. From 1983, the Chinese began to enjoy the new television show, "Celebration Party of the Lunar New Year", which is a variety show featuring modern and traditional songs and dances, magic shows, and the part that people most enjoy : crosstalks and comic skits. All of the performances are original, and the performers begin preparing about half a year before the show. This paper analyzes the reasons for the popularity of the crosstalks and comic skits, and their relation to Chinese culture. 1.1 First the popularity of crosstalks and comic skits is discussed. 1.2 The questioniare results from 488 Beijing residents on their opinions of this genre are summarized. More than 70% of those polled enjoyed both genres. 1.3 The people's preference for comic arts and the historical precedents of the genre are discussed, as well as the current values of the Chinese people reflected in these genres. 2.1 and 2.2 In these two parts, close analyses of two crosstalks and two comic skits are given, with transcripts provided. 3. Finally, the current tolerant atmosphere in China seems to allow for continued high quality programmes in the future.
