TWO DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS OF RELATIVE GROWTH IN LETTUCE LEAF

Localized growth in a lettuce leaf was analyzed numerically for better understanding of the morphological feature of leaf expansion. The relative elemental growth rates in area and in length and the angular velocities of rotation were locally obtained on the basis of the method of fluid dynamics for the 10th leaf of a lettuce grown in a controlled environment. In the distributions of those characteristic values, the growth in the base part of the leaf was found to be more active than that in the tip part of the young leaf. Furthermore, it was indicated that the anisotropic growth occurs in the base and the rotational growth appears in leaf margins. This analysis could be considered to be available for understanding the environmental effect on plant growth.
