Today we are faced with rapid social changes which we have never experienced in our history. Under such circumstances, the kind of moral education we need, in my view, is not the traditional one which indoctrinates some specific values to students but the one which is based on democratic ideas and principles, that is, 'respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.' From this point of view, what I would like to emphasize is that we have to avoid 'Indoctrination' as a method of moral education/teaching, for it is incompatible with the democratic principles which are central to any just educational system. However, even if 'Indoctrination' is unjustified, is it virtually inevitable? In order to avoid it, it is necessary to explore a new concept of moral teaching method, namely, 'Communicative Action' as dialogue, which requires that teachers and students are engaged in learning and developing with each other. The point I wish to make in this article, in short, is that it is crucial for teachers to appreciate what the aim of moral education is, to examine their methods, and to fulfil their role as 'moral agent,' according to the democratic principles. Furthermore, in doing so, teachers need the support and cooperation from others in societies.
