As a member of the Office of Management Strategy, Omron Corporation, I am engaged in corporate-level management strategies pursued by international business groups involved in a variety of overseas operations in such Chinese areas as (mainland) China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, as well as in other areas of Southeast Asia. In this paper, entitled "New Century in Asian Progress: New Situations and Problems in Stepping Up Business," I will discuss the situation now impinging on the Asian scene and the types of challenge faced by Japanese companies in the Asian business environment. At the same time, I will touch on some of the hindsights I have gained as a result of some twentyodd years of having worked and lived in Asia as a businessman and a private citizen. The gist of my argument is as follows: (1) First, I will delve into the nitty-gritty of today's Asian economy----its dynamism and the forces by which it is being driven; (2) I then proceed to the question of Asian political stability and examine the prospects of economic and industrial progress in the region. Here, in respect to the possibility of--and the risks involved in--Asian growth, I will analyze the potentials promising to Asian growth and the perils inherent in it. After touching on the new trends emerging in Asia, some proposals will be made with the aim to reducing the risks associated with them; (3) Next, in covering the problems and challenges confronting Japan and Japanese business in Asia and in offering some suggestions as to overcoming them, I will draw an outline of how Japan and Japanese companies are seen through the eyes of their Asian neighbors, discuss how Japanese business should come to grips with the era of Asian super competition, and touch on some related problems and their solutions; and (4) I will conclude by discussing the latest situation in Vietnam. In my current capacity as the head of an Omron project aimed at establishing a liaison office in Vietnam, I will introduce the situation now prevailing in that country and give examples of foreign firms that have gained a foothold in the Vietnamese market as well as cite some keys for success (KFS).
