The notable change in marine transport from the 1970's to the 1980's has been the tremendous development of containerization and accompanying increase in international combined transport. Freight forwarders play a particularly active role in this field. Although they themselves do not own the means of transport such as ships and planes, they use the actual carriers such as shipping companies, railroad companies, or air carriers as subcontracting carriers to build up the various international combined transport routes to meet the needs of the shippers. One of the trade terms in the Incoterms 1980- "Delivered" (named placed of destination in the country of importation) duty paid, was almost impossible to use in Japan, although its active use has been examined from the point of view of export marketing. These trade terms are rather demanding on the exporter who has to bear all the cost and risk up to delivery of goods to the importer. However, they are extremely advantageous to the importer, who has no obligation other than payment. This paper contends that the use of these trade terms is possible by using the international combined transport offered by freight forwarders and by reviewing these trade terms from multiple aspects such as marine insurance contracts.
