We try to explore the management of enterprises and industrial operations in Japan from the perspective of life innovator. According to the authors' opinion, most of the earlier studies on the subject have been made in compliance with a national demand or with the needs advocated by the capitalists in Japan. The authors, on the contrary, have attempted to identify a new approach to the management and industry which would fit into the logic of life innovator, who seeks to transcend the position of anonymous consumer comparable to a "puppet," attempting to innovate himself consciously on his own initiative. To be short, this could be referred to as a "bottom-up" type of approach. We have, accordingly, considered the problem in terms of the three principal aspects as follows. The first of the aspects is concerned with the management of enterprises and industrial operations directed to a whole system which would maintain harmonious relationships with the living environment or ecosystem of the life innovator. The central theme of this aspect is assessment of the production system with a view to preventing destruction and pollution of environment and to making the living environment clean and recycling. The second is to consider the management of enterprises and industrial operations which aim at improvement of community life as "living place." We have considered the growth of local industry based on local culture, which is essential to formulate the era of regional life, as well as the possibility to form a community fitted to the needs of the living innovator through the evolution of people's conscience from "corporate township" to "corporate citizen." The third is to consider the management and industry aimed at self-actualizing needs on the basis of factual survey and analysis of consumers spending. Desires for leisure activities, economic security in the aging society and other facts have also been considered. Recently, main interest of social researchers has been changing from "materialistic" economy to the economy which places the paramount importance on human being and environment. This stimulates the researchers to find a new paradigm of economics, since they are aware that the mere theories and principles of demand/supply alone cannot explain everything, in order to conceptualize a new economics independent from the principle of market. In quest of the "meta-economy" we will necessarily take into consideration such factors like religion, ethics, etc., and have high expectation about the intelligent behavior of human being. The present life-economic approach is certainly one of these attempts in quest of the meta-economy, and for this reason, the authors have no intention to avoid making value judgement.
