Reduction of sulfur content in diesel fuel has been strongly required as one of the solutions for air pollution problems. In June 2003, the Petroleum Council Subcommittee referred to the appropriate date for introduction of sulfur-free (i.e., sulfur content of less than 10 massppm) diesel fuel as 2007. The petroleum industry in Japan launched the nationwide supply of sulfur-free diesel fuel from January 2005 in advance of government regulation. In the present report, some of the approaches to produce sulfur-free diesel fuel, including revamping a unit, changing the cut point of feed, and new hydrotreating commercial catalysts, are reviewed. To remove the refractory sulfur compounds, such as 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene and other substituted dibenzothiophenes, is the key to achieve the production of sulfur-free diesel fuel. One or more approaches may be employed by refinery to meet the producing sulfur-free diesel fuels at cost effective manner.
