The comparative studies on the reactions of lignite, under oxygen and under nitrogen, with nitric acid provided the following information : 1) The amount of nitrogen oxide formed during the reaction under nitrogen was about three times as much as that formed during the reaction under oxygen; whereas both the amount of nitric acid remaining at the end of the reaction and the total amount of this remaining acid and nitrogen oxide formed during this reaction period were somewhat lager for the reaction under oxygen than for that under nitrogen. 2) The amount of hydrogen cyanide formed during these reactions, though very small, was somewhat larger for the reaction under nitrogen, and it increased with increasing nitric acid concentration and with the reaction time. And also the amount of ammonia formed increased in a similar way to the above case, but no influence of the atmosphere upon the formation of ammonia was observed. In either case, the oxidation of lignite with dilute nitric acid (7% or 15%) was almost completed in an hour. Furthermore, the oxidation by means of 7% nitric acid produced alkali-soluble compounds, the so-called ”humic acids”, in better yield. 3) Although an attempt was made to caulculate a material balance from the results of nitrogen determination of reactants and resultants, an exact result could not be obtained. This is probably due to the overlooking of gaseous nitrogen and others which may be formed during these reactions. The material loss was less marked in the case of the reaction under oxygen than in the other case.
