1. Chromosome number of Aster dimorphophyllus Franch. et Savat. collected from three localities of Kanagawa Prefecture was determined in the meristematic cells of the root tips. The majorities (90.1%) of the clones including the indivisus form and the divisus form were diploid form of 2n=18. The rest (9.9%) of the clones including the both forms were triploid form of 2n=27, which was found for the first time in this studies. 2. The karyotypes at the somatic metaphase were similar to each other in the indivisus diploid form and the divisus diploid form, and in the indivisus triploid form and the divisus triploid form, respectively. The chromosome complement of the triploid forms might consist of the three chromosome sets derived from a chromosome set of the diploid form. 3. The nine bivalents were observed in the meiosis of the PMCs of the diploid form. The trivalents varying in number from three to six were observed in the both triploid forms thus indicating a segmental autotriploid origin of the triploid. 4. The shape of ligulate corollas was more slender in the divisus form than that of the indivisus form, especially in the triploid form of the divisus form.
