The purpose of this study is to examine the hypothesis of the Self-Recognition Need (Kamise, 1992), which predicts that one's sense of the ambiguity of the self concept rouses the need, for self-recognition. One hundred and two college students answered a questionnaire aimed at measuring the need for self-recognition, the consciousness of the instability of the self concept, the unconscious inconsistency between self-knowledge, and the confusion of the ego identity. The results of the survey showed that the ego-identity confusion gave rise to the consciousness of the instability of the self concept, and that this in turn invoked the self-recognition need. On the other hand, the involuntary inconsistency between self-knowledge did not invoke the self-recognition need. The results of this study confirmed the hypothesis of the self-recognition need.
