Igo (the game of Go) is an integral part of traditional Japanese culture. A spiritual activity, it increases creative ability, makes the way of thinking flexible, improves concentration, and cultivates a person. It has a long history and is closely related with many other aspects of culture. I have taught Igo in a course of philosophy; students can thus study traditional Japanese culture, know themselves, and cultivate their characters. The first result of my Igo-study was Tiefpsychology of Igo (1993, Sanichi Publishers). I have also published an article, "The Significance of the 'Igo-Shiki' in the Context of Japanese Cultural History" (Annals of the Institute for Comparative Studies of Culture, Vol. 56, 1995). The culture and spiritual life of the Edo period has much which was psychologically in common with us, but their manners and customs were very different. Therefore, we need to study senryu, which reflected their manners and customs very carefully. I will study senryu about Igo, classifying them into several types, being concerned with Igo psychology, funny scenes or actions, the instruments of Igo, people crazy about Igo, manners and customs, Igo as a metaphor, Igo composition in Japanese and Chinese history, etc.
