This paper discusses how the author views souls, in the Tale ot Genji. It will be revealed in the paper that Sikibu Murasaki held the philosophy that the souls of the dead are set to rest only by the increase and prosperity of their descendants who, in turn, will be protected by following the will of the souls of their ancestors. The conclusion of this paper is that the Tale of Genji is structured around the above philosophy.
