In playing the piano, the player has to learn many type of techniques in oder to express the composer's intention strictly. In terms of these, legato playing is the most difficulty one. I am trying to examine and compare some common and different features between a couple of famous players' interpretations and playing styles on Mozart's sonata for clavichord and Beethoven's sonata for piano. The content of this paper is divided as follows: the history of keyboard instruments; the relationship between Mozart's and Beethoven's sonatas and keyboard instruments; the present playing technique and the mechanism of the piano. As a result, I offer two conclusions on the best legato playing on the piano depending on each composers' arts. First of all, in the case of Mozart's sonata, the player has to use the pedals to express the delicate dynamics of the piece. Secondly, in the case of Beethoven's sonata, the player has to use the useful pedalling to express the strong and weak dynamics very clearly.
