The following is the outline of the present thesis: [A] 'And' introducing a consequence to what has gone before: (a) 'The predicted consequence or fulfilment of a command, or of hypothesis put imperatively, or elliptically.' (b) 'The historical sequel or consequence of a fact'. [B] 'And' introducing an adversative statement to what has gone before, that is, used as a substitute for 'but' etc. As to [A] (a), I think it unnecessary to say much, as it is well understood by our English students. Merely from the standpoint of classification I have taken it up. Consequently it is treated as briefly as possible. With regard to [A] (b) and [B], I have given a large number of examples collected by me besides those in O. E. D., W. N. I. D. and U. Ohlander. This is because I want to make [A] (b) and [B] more clearly be understood, by collecting examples so as to give as much variety as possible to the context in which the word in question is used.
