Until about 1630, several hundreds drapiers had been taking the leading part in the textile-industry in Leiden. The greater parts of them were the immigrants from the South-Netherland and the middle-class people with independent enterprising spirit. Between 1630 and 1640 the reder (merchant-manufacturer), a man of enterprise of a new type, emerged and took the place of drapiers, making efforts to the concentration and the expansion of his management. The majority of the drapier lost their independence and became the Zwischen-Meister of the reder. Het Welvaren der stad Leiden by pieter de la Court, a reder and great politico-economic writer, gives us a vivid and detailed description on the aspect of these woollen-industrial developement.
