Dr. Toru Oya regarded Goin-shidai as the original Goju-onzu (the table of Japanese syllable letters). Since then the Goin-shidai has become one of the most important materials when studying the history of Goju-onzu. Dr. Yoshio Yamada denied the most fundamental issue of Dr. Oya that Goin-shidai has been handed down by Ryogen, the priest of Tendai school. Dr. Yamada proves that Goin-shidai is the secret instruction how to recite kyo, which has derived from the same origin as Dokyo-kuden-meikyoshu. Nowadays, as to Goin-shidai, Dr. Yamada's interpretation is generally accepted. The purpose of this article is to devide the Goin-shidai into eight parts and to find out the source of each part, because it seems that the Goin-shidai can be divided into eight independent parts, each part having its own context, and having been derived from different sources. We have come to the conclusion that Goin-shidai is constructed as follows: [table] The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th parts contains five different Gojuonzu; the 5th, 6th and 8th parts contains the method of pronouncing Chinese character and reciting kyo. From the analysis above mentioned, Goin-shidai is not on the method of reciting kyo as Dr. Yamada says, but it is primarily the collection of various old Goju-onzu.
