The present author attempted the experiments concerning the effects of various chemicals upon the action of the melanophore hormone. Among them those of anilin dyes was highly attractive. The hormone solution employed in this experiment was extracted from the posterior lobe of hypophysis of Squalus suckleyi (GIRARD), a kind of shark in Ochotsk sea. The method of the extraction of hormone was followed after Dietel's, using sulfuric acid and barium hydro-oxide. The results of the experiment are detailed in the table of the text. From this experiment the following conclusions can be deduced: 1. The dye solutions of violet color effect generally the inhibition upon the action of the hormone, viz. the cessation of the expansion of melanophores on the way to the final expansion (showed by asterisks in the table). This inhibition may be brought about by the photodynamic action in certain way on the mechanism of the expansion of melanophores, though in some cases the toxicity of dyes to the protoplasm may be probable. 2. The acidic and basic properties of dyes are apparently in no relation to the acceleration of melanophores by the hormone.
