Perceptual judgments of objects are dependent on the momentary adaptation level or perceptual frame of reference. In the case that we memorize and recall some prorerties of objects, what role does perceptual framework or adaptation level play in retention and recall? By the reproduction method the present experiment was planed to explore the effect of prevailing adaptation level on the memorized size of squares and recalling them. For the purpose of the experiment, the momentary adaptation levels in impression session and in reproduction session are varied systematically by means of interposed stimulus series. After impression session AL of Group A was shifted to a smaller size, whereas AL of Group C was changed to a larger one. Groups B (control group) adapted to the same sizes as in impression session. The ratios of the reproduced sizes after shifting AL to the ones in intial adaptation level in each group were compared to get the information about the relationship between reproduced size and AL. Comparison of the ratios in each condition showed that the ratio increased with increasing adaptation level, whereas with decreasing adaptation level it decreased. These results indicate that the reproduction of a memorized size varies as a function of size of interposed second adaptation series, that is, in the present conditions the reproduction performance depends upon the prevailing AL.
