I have studied the change of the usage of the 50 Kanji (Chinese characters) listed on the research on the Yubinhochi (1877-1878) and 90 modern magazines (1960), and Nihon Kihon Kanji (Japanese Basic Chinese Characters) (pb. 1942) as the most frequently used ones throughout 1877-1960, in Essays and Studies Vol. XVII, No. 2 (March 1967). This study is its continuation. I have investigated about 150 Chinese Characters which were listed in the research on the Yubinhochi as frequently used ones next to those studied before. Because many Chinese characters have to be dealt with, I set up the following criteria. The Chinese characters mostly read phonetically The Chinese characters mostly read translated into Japanese The Chinese characters read both phonetically and translated into Japanese The Chinese characters appeared in names of a man or a place Among these four groups, the following points were considered: The Chinese characters still used frequently today The Chinese characters used not so frequently today The Chinese characters which are used frequently today, but the words where they appear have changed recently.
