This monograph aims at analizing characteristics of Japanese natural science education of Meiji era in elementary school. The 1st Period (1872-1885); from "Gakusei" of 5th year of Meiji to the formation of "Rika" (an intergrated course of natural science education like the American general science course). During this term, the Meiji Government made much of natural science education and earnestly encouraged it. At the time, it was intended to combine academic disciplines such as physics, chemistry and biology with subject matter, and such subjects as Kyurigaku, Kagaku, Hakubutsu and Seiri were organized. Although, as for instruction method, there were some shortcomings, it should be appricated that subjects are organized on the basis of academic disciplines. The 2nd Period (1886-1903); the formation of "Rika". In 1886 (19th year of Meiji), so-called "Rika" was formed by the Meiji Government. And the Japanese natural science education changed its course. As can be judged by the dicrease of time in class-room schedule, it seems that natural science education was made light of. At the same time, it excluded academic discipline from its integration principle in curriculum and took leave of academic discipline. Instead, daily life and experience, every affair and utility (practical use) were adopted as the principle of organizing subject-matter. Sucha trend remains up to this time. As a matter of fact, it was a death blow to the development of natural science education.
