The focus of my study is to put on a middle work of Roka Tokutomi, Yadorigi, which has been scarcely studied up till today. My purpose here is not a mere analysis of the work itself, but an investigation of the process how the work has taken shape in its author's literary development, and also of the characteristics which were built by the author to be appropriate to the novel. Finally I would like to express my own opinion upon those two investigations. What I have expressed here is as follows: 1) The most primary inclination in Roka's literature during the former half thirties of Meiji Era, is his unique view of nature. There lay an elastic and broad understanding of nature, which could grasp not only nature itself, but also society and people. 2) In the latter half of thirties, the view of nature has rapidly retreated within the author himself. A precise idea without any limitation of history and society called "Naked Self" has taken place of the above unique viewpoint. The abundant materials of Yadorigi recorded by Zenpei Ogasawara, has been taken by Roka Tokutomi from this point of view. 3) Therefore, it can be explained that Roka's tendency towards quite thorough respect of the material and towards using no special technique and decoration has become a reflection or a necessary conclusion to the literature of the idea meaning the above mentioned "Back to the Naked Self". Thus it may be possible to unify the several answers for the strange question: who the original author of Yadorigi is.
