Polyamine Distribution Patterns in Gram-Positive Eubacteria : The Absence of Cellular Polyamine Synthesis

Cellular polyamines of newly validated seventeen genera belonging to the two taxa of Gram-positive eubacteria were analyzed by HPLC. Brochothrix was devoid of polyamines and Globicatella and Dolosignarulum synthesized spermidine within the low G+C subgroup. Appreciable amounts of polyamines were not detected in the high G+C subgroup, Nocardioides, Aeromicrobium and Microlunatus, and the six genera Brachybacterium, Dermcoccus, Kocuria, Kytococcus, Nestenkonia and Luteococcus transferred from the genus Micrococcus. The coryneform Dermbacter produced cadaverine as the major polyamine. The actinomycetes Dermatophilus and Acidothermus, and anaerobic Bifidobacterium and Propionibacterium, belonging to the high G+C subgroup, had no polyamine synthetic ability.
