The text written by a Japanese student was read by five native Americans and their written comprehensions were compared to the original text. The comparison included both global and local assessments. The results indicated: 1. The original text was fairly expresive, in spite of the syntactic errors in it. 2. The meaning is conveyed by content words, and once meaning is grasped, syntactic errors can be corrected by the reader. 3. The words unrerated to the content hardly makes sense to the reader. From these observations, it was argued that EFL writing instruction should be done, focusing on the meaning.
