The purposes of this study are to examine the promotion of food education in Japan from the viewpoint of gender and to contribute to food education for men and women in the future. The first section outlines the organic law for food education; the second section examines the policy and method for promoting food education in Japan. The examination results are as follows. First, promotion of food education in Japan has not answered key questions related to problems about food education for men and women, about men and housekeeping, or about men and cooking. Second, in comparing the ratio of men and women currently in the food education movement in Japan, we find that the ratio for men in top positions in organizations is presently increasing and also that the ratio of women in lower positions of organizations is increasing quite significantly. These are organizations with a male-dominated structure controlled by men. Third, the present promotion of food education in Japan appears to be gradually transforming into a campaign concerning the symbiotic relationship between men and women. A nongovernmental organization is conducting a campaign for food education of men. This campaign appears to be gradually spreading the concept of food education for men and women with equal rights for men and women in school education. The promotion of food education for men and women from the viewpoint of a symbiotic relationship between man and woman should be pursued more positively in the future.
