It will be absurd for the English theatre-goers to appreciate G. B. Shaw's Pygmalion through a textbook. Needless to say, it was or has been an extremely successful play, both on stage and screen. The phonetic difference between classes is certainly one of the important themes of this play, and it is impossible to understand it unless we go to theatres. The author tells us in its Preface that Pygmalion has made a great success all over Europe and North America as well as at home. Then, could the people in the foreign countries appreciate it just as the native speakers? Were all the performances always the same through the world? No doubt the actors and actresses played their parts differently. I remember the Royal Shakespeare Company played The Twelfth Night more comically in Japan than in the Aldwych. They know there are something incomprehensible for the Japanese. It is true. On the other hand, we have a habit of reading the text more precisely than the native speakers. Thanks to G. B. S., we can approach Pygmalion from quite a different point of view, as will be seen later on.
