In the bilingual mental lexicon of Japanese learners of English, loan words have quite unique characteristics. They are orthographically described in both Japanese style(i.e. 'katakana') and English style(i.e. alphabet), whereas their pronunciations are almost the same. It is assumed that loan words are connected to both L1(Japanese) system and L2(English) system. In order to investigate the learning of loan words, orthographically mixed word lists were constructed for the incidental learning test after rating scale tasks. Experiment 1 used two types of rating scale tasks to investigate the relationship between task types and orthographic types. The result showed no interaction of these two factors, but main effect of orthographic type was found with the significantly higher recall rate for alphabet stimuli. Experiment 2 was conducted to investigate whether word imagery itself can affect recall rates. The result showed higher recall rate for the high-imagery word group, and the effect of imagery was confirmed.
