As an approach to investigate the stucture of bilinguals' mental lexicon, the experiment of semantic priming effect which uses stimuli of different associative strength is often employed. However, as 'association' implies strong linking of corresponding words, another approach to the structure of the mental lexicon is possible by analyzing the phenomena of the word association itself. From this standpoint, the results of the word association test to obtain associative strength were analyzed. First, both Japanese and English associations were quantitatively analyzed to get the response distribution, the total number of reaction words, the number of no-responses, the number of different reaction words, etc. Then a comparison was made with the conventional association norms. The results made clear some important facts about the word association and the structure of bilinguals' mental lexicons.
