In this paper, I deal with the way "time" is handled in "A Rose for Emily." This short story begins with Miss Emily's death, continues through an elaborate course of flashbacks and flashforwards told by the narrator, and ends by returning to her death, where we were at the beginning of the story. This narrative manipulation of time motivates us to pay attention to time itself. Our gradual awareness of the manipulation of time might lead to better understanding of the character, Emily, and of the story itself. Moreover, I focus on the function of the narrator in the story, the "we" who covers the length of Emily's life and serves as a spokesperson for the values of the town and of the outsiders.
