Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie is a revision of Chris Christopherson through The Old Davit. Why does Anna have to have been a prostitute in Anna Christie? In the original Chris Christophersen, Anna was a governness and a typist. Why did Eugene O'Neill change Ann in the character? In order to examine the playwright's intention of Ann character in Anna Christie and discuss how effective Anna is as a former prostitute instead of a governness or typist, the contrastive structure of the play is pointed out in comparison with Anna in Chris Christophersen. That is, in Anna Christie the father and daughter relationship between Chris and Anna is much more constrastive in that the former hates the sea and wants to live on land, whereas the latter hates the land and likes the sea. The entire play revolves around the father-and-daughter constrastive relationship. Moreover, the necessity of Anna as a former prostitute is discussed in that Anna as a former prostitute makes the contrast more conspicuous.
