This study firstly reports on a two-week nursing program, which was held in Melbourne, Australia in 2001. Secondly, it examines the effects of the program on the participants in terms of their internal growth and awareness towards Australian culture, behaviour and the language. Lastly, it explores affiliation need observed in the participants in comparison with English major students in a similar program in England. The results suggest that (1) the overseas nursing program is useful for motivational reasons, (2) the nursing students observed their host families rather critically, and (3) they seem to have higher affiliation need than English majors and were able to perform well in everyday situations by keeping eye-contact, smiling and nodding for agreement.
