The purpose of this study was to identify the perception of "healing" by nurses in this study. A survey was administered to 1,070 nurses in G Prefecture in June and July, 1996. The nurses were asked to complete a questionnaire, which addressed perceptions and experiences of "healing". Nine hundred and fifty five (89.2%) nurses responded to and returned to the researcher. Approximately 40% of the nurses indicated having perceived patient "healing". Many of these nurses defined "healing" as a "comfort", "warmth", and "sympathy". Factor analysis was performed for all responses and 6 factors were extracted. The factors were categorized into "states of mind", "relationship with others", and "soul and body". Nurses' indications of situations when their patients experiences "healing" involved experiences with family members, such as "healing of close ties with family", "being loved my family", and "being supported my family". Six factors were extracted by factor analysis, and were categorized into 4 categories, "relationship with family", "relationship with doctors and nurses", "acceptance of death", and "basic desires". The factors that influences nurse perceptions of "healing" were nursing career and positive attitude of nursing.
