This is a study of the current situation of central Fukui city, focusing on its economic situation and the urban planning. The Data has been drawn from a questionnaire distributed to shops belonging to five of the business promoting organizations, and from interviews with Darumaya-Seibu department store. On the economic aspect, we found that: (1) the central Fukui shopping center is relatively depressive, contrasting to the suburban commercial districts, (2) among the shops, there is an unequal economic development, and (3) a great number of shops agree to the enlargement of Darumaya-Seibu department store, but a few smaller shops are starting to feel differently. On the urban planning, especially concerning the issue of urban transport and population distribution, we found that: (1) many of shops expect the development of a community bus system, but they also want to increase parking lots, and (2) according to a census, the population of central Fukui city, while getting smaller, is also getting older. Despite many limitations of our analysis, we can foresee two possibilities for the future of central Fukui city. One would be to become a highly-developed managerial and business center. The other would be to reestablish itself as a community.
