Automobile has been the most familiar traffic means over railways or airplanes. However, the overpopulation of automobile along with the proceeding of industrialization makes serious traffic problem. Various ideas and solutions about the shape of cross road as well as the traffic signal system have been suggested and developed to settle the traffic problem. Recently, several traffic signal systems introduce sensors such as ultrasound sensor and piezoelectric sensor which is used for measurement of traffic quantity, namely, counting the number of cars around the cross road. However, it is very difficult to introduce directly such traffic signal system in real traffic road systems. In general, the real traffic systems are so complex that we cannot grasp the characteristics of those systems. New traffic systems need to take on effective control techniques for a lot of traffic situations in order to settle those traffic problems. In this study, a new control method to ease the traffic jam will be suggested by the investigation and evaluation using the simulation program. The applicability and the effectiveness of the new traffic signal system using the fuzzy control and neural-network control methods will be described sufficiently.
