The 'yes/ no' question technique is used frequently in language education. This article studies a number of the key issues underpinning this technique. Because pedagogy itself is partially rooted in social aims and aspirations, it is argued that the act of questioning cannot be understood separately from its socio-political background. To establish their pedagogic value in terms of second language development, the form, meaning and socio-political intention of 'yes/ no' questions are separated, and their pedagogic aims are examined against an analytical framework comprising syntactic, cognitive and psychological criteria.
