We have developed a three dimensional (3-D) polymer waveguide as a connecting device between optoelectronic elements and fibers, and applied it to a bidirectional 4-channel optical parallel transceiver. The 3-D waveguide, fabricated by high precision injection molding of a polymer, optically connects VCSELs/PIN PDs and fibers which are mounted at right angles to each other. It is composed of a base structure with rectangular grooves in filled with core material covered by overclads, and of an integrated microlens array that optically couples fibers and waveguides, and VCSELs/PIN PDs to waveguides. This approach simplified a complicated process of optical assembly, and contributed to realizing compact size and lower cost with large volume productivity. The optical transceiver with an optical interface of 12-flber MPO connector, is mounted on the cable plug that is the industry standard MDI connector for high speed copper interface specified in 10GBASE-CX4, InfiniBand 4X and 10G Fibre Channel standards. This transceiver is hot-pluggable to the MDI port and capable of making data traffic over 200m multimode fiber with 850nm wavelength at 3.125Gbps.
