Content-Based Instruction (CBI), though increasingly prominent in Japanese universities as an approach to English as a Foreign Language (EFL), has been ambiguously defined in practice. This paper presents the theoretical foundations of CBI, and outlines the elements of Sustained-Content Language Teaching (SCLT), a useful sub-category within the field of CBI that provides a conceptual framework for the design of syllabi in which unified subject matter can be extended throughout an entire course. Visual Arts instruction and how it can be effectively utilized in an SCLT context will be introduced, with a consideration of one possible set of activities related to narrative construction.
