One of the most basic aspects of cross-cultural interaction is how one culture regards the creative output of another In the last thirty years there has been a paradigm shift in how the material culture produced by indigenous peoples around the world is being treated Objects which were once appropriated for ethnographic purposes or confiscated as part of legislation designed to encourage native acculturation, are now being reevaluated, and in many cases returned to native groups This paper will look at two early cases of the return of cultural property in North America the repatriation of the Zum Ahayu da in the United States and the "Potlatch Collection" to the Kwakwaka'wakw in Canada Together, both cases mark the watershed of a new age in how indigenous cultural items are dealt with and perceived, and raise important issues highlighting differing cultural attitudes toward the appropriate context of these items, and how this contextual element can function in the broader framework of cultural identity
