Teachers can know many things about students from observing them but they cannot always know how students perceive the learning process. Reflective learner journals can be one way of bridging the gap between teacher and learner perceptions. Strategies can be taught which help students to overcome difficulties in discussion in English. Students can use journals to report their perceptions of the use of strategies in discussions. There are many published studies which focus on the cultural differences between East and West in ways of thinking and classroom situations. They sometimes stereotype Japanese students as not being able to express opinions. The different expectations of the classroom between Western teachers and Japanese students can lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations of behavior. Students may not always have the skills to articulate any difficulties they may have. Other studies, however, suggest that education reforms have brought about a new generation of students who are much better at expressing themselves in English. This would suggest that we cannot rely totally on published papers to understand the thought processes of our students. We need to find a way to verify these processes for ourselves. In higher-level discussions students are often good at speaking but lack the strategies that would make their conversation more fluent and natural. Their experience of communication in English may have been limited to the classroom so they may not have had a chance to acquire these strategies naturally. They need to be made consciously aware of strategies to make their communication clearer and overcome difficulties. These strategies may consist of fillers and other devices that provide scaffolding and security in the language and make students more fluent. In order for teachers to better understand students' perceptions of strategies and their use, learner journals are to be recommended. These allow students to reveal their personal reflections in a non-threatening framework which is familiar
