Culture is generally considered to be a necessary part of language teaching. The term embraces not only the way we present background information about native speakers of the foreign language, but also the methodology we employ and our concept of who is best qualified to teach the language. lt also has pragmatic implications for the functions and behavior we emphasize when we teach. lt is part of a whole ideology of language teaching. As long as we consider languages to be associated with the cultures of geographically specific areas, we can narrow down the focus of culture teaching to specific areas of lifestyle and etiquette. However, we can argue that English, as an international language, has a special role in the world and therefore such assumptions no longer apply. We have to find an approach between the extreme of making English culture free and that of embracing all the cultures which can be covered by English. Given these circumstances, I shall discuss the view that there is no fixed answer as to what culture should be taught and how it should be presented. I shall first look at the role of English in the world. Next, I shall consider the issue of the materials that are used to teach it and the message that they give about culture. This will lead us to look at the question of appropriate methodology. I shall question the Anglo-American dominance in materials, instructors and methods and investigate possibilities of starting from the learners' own culture and situation to develop an approach which makes the culture of English more accessible to all.
