In this article, I intend to present the data of Japanese porcelain found around the South China Sea and to discuss the trading route of Japanese porcelain. Japanese porcelain was exported from Nagasaki in Japan to Southeast Asia between the late 17th century and the middle of the 18th century. It was produced in Hizen area (Hizen is an old name of Saga and Nagasaki Prefectures) and was transported by Dutch V.O.C. ships and Chinese junks. It is known that many pieces of Japanese porcelain were found at sites in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia. But there was no evidence that Japanese porcelain was exported to the Philippines before our research. The subject concerning the galleon trade of Japanese porcelain has been hardly discussed. One of the reasons is that Japanese porcelain was not discovered in Manila. And another reason is that we didn't understand the role of Chinese junks well. In March 2004, we researched the shards of porcelain unearthed in Intramuros in Manila. Though they were mainly the shards of Chinese porcelain produced between the late 16th century and the 19th century, I found some pieces of Japanese porcelain. Accordingly we started a joint research about ceramics found in Manila with the Archaeology Division of the National Museum of the Philippine in January, 2005. We have researched the shards unearthed at some excavated sites in Manila and I found about 60 pieces of Japanese porcelain. This discovery strongly supports that Japanese porcelain was imported to Manila. And it implies that Japanese porcelain was transported from Manila to Acapulco by Spanish galleon ships, because some of Japanese porcelain shards found in Intramuros are identical to the shards of blue and white plates unearthed in Mexico City and in Guatemala. In March and May 2005,we researched porcelain unearthed in Taiwan and Southern China. Because I supposed that some cities in Taiwan and Southern China were relay ports of the trade network of Japanese porcelain by Chinese junks. And there I found that some Japanese porcelain shards were similar to those I identified in Manila. And they included some shards of Japanese porcelain for the European world. Now we understand that Chinese junks exported Japanese porcelain from Nagasaki to Manila via Taiwan and Southern China. And some Japanese porcelains were used in Intramuros in Manila and other Japanese porcelains were transported from Manila to Mexico by Spanish galleon ships.
