Sacatinta (Justicia spicigera Schlecht) is used an additional botanical source for indigo in the Central America. Because the strong brilliant bluish purple colorant obtained from the fresh leaves is not always fast, nor is it as strong in hue as that from indigo, it is mainly used to make a bluing for whitening clothes. This research has been done for the purpose of characterizing the dyeing properties of the colorants extracted from sacatinta and finding more effective dyeing technique to improve the color fastness. In this paper it is described that the suitable dyeing condition with the natural reduced form (natural vat) of the sacatinta dye was selected based on the wash and light fastness tests of standard test fabrics dyed by the different kinds of dyeing methods.
