Nonenzymatic cytochrome c reducing activity is present in the homogenate of insects and it is thought to belong to certain compounds of low molecular weight. This activity was high at high pHs and low ionic strength. The activity interfered with the assay of superoxide dismutase, the activity of which has probably been underestimated up to now. Because of the cytochrome c reductants are of low molecular weight, they could be removed from the assay system by gel-filtration and by microconcentration.
